6th Edition of the Symbiosis PhD School in Portugal, supported by the CRC 1182
The 6th Summer School on Symbiosis at Gulbenkian Institute of Molecular Medicine (GIMM) at Oeiras/Lisbon brought together 35 doctoral students from around the world and 25 internationally renowned lecturers.
The biannual Summer School is organized by Martin Blaser (Rutgers University USA), Thomas Bosch (University of Kiel, Germany), Margaret McFall-Ngai (Caltech/Carnegie, USA), Luis Teixera (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), and Karina Xavier (Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine in Oeiras, Portugal). The aim of the school is to train a new generation of symbiosis researchers. This is achieved through lectures, seminars, discussion groups, and also through exercises in which groups of 4-5 students work together over a two-week period to develop a convincing research proposal on a new topic. Two lecturers were former participants of the summer school. A group activity in the form of a boat trip on the Tejo River rounded off the program.

The CRC 1182 supported the school by providing funds for three poster prizes and travel allowances for participants from the CRC 1182. Pictured below together with Thomas Bosch are Kateryna Pantiukh (1st prize, Estonian Genome Centre, University of Tartu Estonia, left), Xiaotong Zhang (2nd prize, University of Manchester, UK, right) and Ehsan Sakib (Zoological Institute, Kiel University, 2nd from right), who were awarded the poster prizes sponsored by CRC 1182:
