Talks about:

Using genomics to enrich our knowledge of the human gut microbiome

The study of the human gut microbiome, the complex community of microorganisms inhabiting our intestinal tract, represents an emerging area of biomedical research. Given the hundreds to thousands of microbes that live inside us, the main challenges in the field are understanding who these microbes are and how they contribute to human health. In this talk, I will present how genomics can help us capture the diversity of the gut microbiome at an unprecedented resolution and how these approaches have allowed us to identify almost 2,000 uncultured bacterial species that had never been seen before. These results have opened a microbiome pandora’s box, raising important questions regarding the role of the many uncultured gut bacteria in host health and disease.
