Picture a Scientist: Screening and Panel Discussion (online)

The CRC 1182 would like to invite you to the event “Picture a Scientist”, which was organized by different consortia of Kiel University.
The event consists of a film screening followed by a panel discussion about the situations depicted in the film. Please find attached the announcement.

You will have the opportunity to watch the film “Picture a Scientist” (trailer: www.pictureascientist.com/media) flexible between Sunday May 30, 2021, 17:30 and Tuesday June 1, 2021, 17:30 (48h access).

The feature-length documentary chronicles three renowned experienced female researchers: biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring.
They lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming harassment, institutional discrimination and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science.

Even though this film is solely about female scientists, I especially recommend male scientists to take the time to watch this film to get a better understanding of what kind of discrimination mostly only female researchers have to deal with, especially since male scientists are needed to make a change in this system.

The additional panel discussion on Tuesday June 1, 2021, 18:00-19:30, moderated by Dr Sabine Blackmore (Berlin), gives the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the documentary in order to draw parallels with the own working place and to develop strategies for change in academic institutions.

The panellists are:
Dr Sonja B. Grimm (Researcher CRC 1266 / Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology, Schleswig)
Dr Hinrich Schulenburg (Professor for Evolutionary Ecology and Genetics, Kiel University)
Dr Nahid Talebi (Professor for Solid State Physics, Kiel University)

Audience: Screening and panel discussion are open to all members of the participating research associations. Interested people from other research consortia please contact the CRC 1182 office (office@metaorganism-research.com) and do not forward the registration data on your own, as we have to pay for each individual access.
