Prof. Iwijn de Vlaminck, Cornell University

Iwijn de Vlaminck from the Cornell University, United States, is a leading expert in spatial transcriptomics. His group develops innovative methods for high-resolution mapping of cellular processes within tissues. Among their recent advances is a polyadenylation-based strategy that enables spatial transcriptomics at one-micron resolution, allowing for detailed investigation of microbe-host and microbe-microbe interactions at the single-cell level. He will give a talk:

Spatial sequencing of host-microbiome interactions

“Microbe–microbe and microbe–host interactions are critical to gut microbiome function, yet few tools can measure these relationships in situ. In this talk I will introduce imaging- and sequencing-based spatial techniques my lab has developed to map complex microbiomes and their interactions with host tissues. I will illustrate how these methods reveal the altered spatial organization of the gut microbiome in colorectal cancer and the biogeography of oral biofilms in health and disease. Finally, I will briefly highlight our separate efforts to develop non-invasive liquid-biopsy tools for monitoring inflammatory diseases from blood.”
