Dr. Irene Sanz Puente, ATB

Irene Sanz Puente from the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy, Potsdam, will give a talk:

Structure, dynamics and agronomic benefits of the wheat seed microbiome

“Wheat is one of the most widely cultivated cereals globally, with the seed being its most economically significant organ. This work analyses the endophytic microbiome of different wheat species, consistently confirming the presence of the genus Pantoea. Interestingly, these bacteria can be vertically transmitted from parental seeds to their offspring, establishing themselves as essential components of the plant holobiont. Genomic studies of Pantoea agglomerans seed isolates, the most representative culturable species, identified a novel genomic group specialized in plant growth promotion. Finally, field studies confirm the potential of wheat seed endophytes as biofertilizers, especially under stress, positioning them as key tools for future sustainable agriculture.”
